This Is Me

I guess without trying to sound egocentric, I am the reason Buttons and Beaus came to be. Not because I grew up with any profound desire to be a fundraiser, not because I had a long history with the MS Society. In all honesty, the initial reason Buttons and Beaus was created, was a way to deal with my own personal grief.

At 24, partway through my B. Ed at the University of Ottawa, being diagnosed with multiple sclerosis was the last thing I ever expected to happen. But it did. One day I was fine. The next day my eyes couldn't see straight. Overnight my life seemed to change. That was one year ago.

Here I am today, still a little bit scared about what my future holds, but in the meantime, I hold my head up high. I have MS but there is no way that MS will ever have me. I'm going to advocate, I'm going to spread the word. We can do this.

Why do I do the walk for MS?

I do the walk because I'm lucky. I do the walk because I have so many friends and family standing not behind me, but alongside me. I do the walk because I don't want to end up in a wheelchair. I do the walk because I can. I do it because I am not going to sit at home, waiting for this disease to take my life away, I simply won't let it.
